The American Civil War was a civil war that was fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. As a result of long standing controversy over slavery,war broke out in April 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, shortly after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated.

Outbreak of the war :
The election of Lincoln caused the legislature of South Carolina to call a state convention to consider secession.The convention summoned unanimously voted to secede on December 20,1860 and adopted the " Declaration of the immediate Cause which include an justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union".
Masterng the ordinances of secession passed by the individual states,those of three- Texas , Alabama and Virginia.The rest make no mention of the slavery issue, and are often brief announcements dissolutionof the ties by the legislatures.
The states agreed to form a new federal
agreement , the Confederate States of America,on February 4,1861. They took control of federal forts and other properties within their boundaries with little resistance from outgoingPresident James Buchanan,whose term ended on March 4,1861.

There were numerous technological innovations dureing the Civil War that had a great impact on 19th century science. The civil war was one of the earliest examples of an "industrial war", in which technologicalmight is used to achieve military supremacy
 
in a war. New inventions, such as the trainand telegraph, delieverd soldiers supplies
and messagesat at time when horses were considered to be the fastest way to travel. It was also in this war when when countries first used aerial warfare, in the form of reconnaissance balloons ,to a significant effect. It saw the first involving steam powered ironclad warships in naval warfare history.
