    Abraham Ortelius, Flemish Abraham Ortels or Abraham Wortels , Flemish cartographer and dealer in maps, books and antiquities who published the first modern Atlas, Theatrum Orbis terrarum (1570).

His very first maps of were Egypt, the Holy land, Asia, Spain and the Roman empire.Fascinated by the discoveries in America,Asia anf Africs in 1857, he published a map titled, "America or the new world,a new description".
     
     
Trained as an engraver, Ortelius about 1554 set up his book and antiquary buisness. About 1560, under the influence of Gerardus Mercator ,Ortelius become interested in map making.Within a decade he compiled maps of the world on a heart shaped projection(1564), as well as the first edition of Theatrum which contained 70 maps derived from 87 authorities and engraved in a uniform style. Ortelius was appointed geographer to Phillip II of Spain(1575). A fascimile of the Theatrum was published in 1964.
